Audaciousness is an asset - and the eSkootr Championship™ (eSC) has some very ambitious goals: new vehicles, a new approach to sustainability, and a very new approach to the on-course racing - women and men racing head to head.

Blending Worlds

A completely new form of racing AND with the goal of being carbon neutral right from the jump, meant that our approach to broadcasting the eSC was going to have to be as unique as the on track action. From go the goal from the eSC was clear: Make this new sport look like a video game. With top speeds hovering around 100km/h - conveying the sense of speed was KPI #1. Using a combination of FPV drones and onboard cameras - the sense of speed came through on stream.

Up until now, virtual broadcast sets have generally fallen into two categories:

‍

1) 2D Remote Broadcasts we all know (and kinda hate?)

‍

2) Virtual environments that mimic a traditional Broadcast set (eg. Along the lines of what we’re producing on the eChampions League Finals)


ENTER PLAYER 3: A first of it’s kind, completely unique environment using Unreal Engine that blurs gaming and broadcast.

One of the most impressive accomplishments of the broadcasts is maybe also the least obvious. Coordinating and producing up to 17 alternate language Commentator teams per stop, was a significant undertaking. The results may not be immediately obvious on screen – but the "go wide" approach significantly drove viewership in the two-wheeled racing hotbeds of Italy and Spain.

Fun facts

We're still pushing hard to make everything we do sustainable. For eSC we offset our carbon emissions from travel; AND we also leveraged remote crew (including EVS) to reduce the initial carbon footprint.
Each electric scooter has three built in on-board cameras that we can pull into the broadcast live or via EVS. The passing (and crashing) footage is sick.
Up to 14 different hats were featured on the weekly production calls. Yes, we like caps.
